The Most Effective Drugs For Combating Conception Problems

March 7, 2010 by pregnancy

With the cost of ivf so high, many times when a woman is having problems conceiving, the fertility specialist will prescribe drugs. And, in the majority of cases, the drug recommended will be Clomid. But there are other drugs that can be just as useful.

There’s a secondary class of fertility drugs, not as popular as Clomid, known as gonadotropins. In terms of composition, they are somewhat like the FSH and LH hormones. Normally, these hormones are generated by the pituitary gland. If they are not, however, gonadrotropins can be used to replace the deficient FSH and LH hormones that would normally be produced by the pituitary gland. At one time, these drugs were produced from the urine of menopausal women. Today, however, they are genetically engineered. The woman takes thes drugs via injection in either in the buttocks or just under the skin.

Lesser prescribed fertility drugs include:

Human Menopausal Conadrotropins (hMG) – this is a distilled extraction of LH and FSH taken from the urine of postmenopausal women. It is injected either subcutaneous or directly into the muscle.

Human Chorionic Conadotropin (hCG) -  this hormone assists the ovaries in the making of progesterone and estrogen. In normal cases, ovulation usually occurs within 36 hours after injection.

Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) – this hormone triggers the pituitary gland to make the LH and FSH hormones. It is expensive and less available in the U.S. than it used to be.

Progesterone supplement – if the woman’s body is not producing enough of the progesterone hormone on it’s own, she may be given this drug. It is usually taken orally, but can be taken by injection as well.

If you monitor some of the Internet ivf message boards, you’ll find other effective drugs as well.

Each year, aw we learn more about the reproduction system, new fertility drugs hit the market. And, normally, there is no magic drug that can trigger fertility, at least not when used alone. These drugs are often used in combination with one or more other fertility treatments. In addition, in many cases the cause of the infertility is not with the woman. It may be that  the male’s sperm may be bad. In other cases, the cause of the infertility may be with the woman, but not related to hormones. In these cases hormone treatments will be useless.

The action of a midwife prior to giving birth

Most people associate a midwife as someone who helps a woman during delivery. What a lot of people do not know is that a midwife is very much involved in a lot of issues before delivery. They play a very important role that shouldn’t be overlooked. So in this article we are going to learn what some of these things are that they accomplish prior to delivery.

Some of the things you look for are the health of the mother. This is important not only for the mother but it will help determine if using a midwife would be wise. Because if they find out that there might be a complication during delivery, they may rule out the possibility of a home delivery. In other words if the woman’s health has problems that woman could be referred to a doctor.  This has comforted many women in my homebirth midwives San Diego services knowing if they could have complications or not.

The next significant thing they will look into is the prenatal care for the health of the baby. A midwife will have access to all the tools needed to make sure that the baby is growing fine indeed. They will be able to tell if the heartbeat is fine. They will be able to find out and learn if there are other issues to be worried about.  This is a big benefit women look for in my homebirth San Diego practice.

Last but not least, a midwife can help throughout the pregnancy period to monitor the health of both the baby and the mother. Obviously things can change during a pregnancy so regular visits will help monitor. These regular maintenance will help determine if anything unusual came up that needs some attention. This is very important to many women I see in my San Diego home birth practice.

So as you have read, even if you have utilized a midwife, it doesn’t mean that the regular care is not present. As a matter of fact, the level of care you may get from a midwife could overshadow everything else.

Discovering the Great Helps of Natural Birth Control

Natural birth control depends on fertility awareness. There are many couples out there who for one reason or another cannot use hormonal contraceptives, and prefer to combine natural family planning with some non-traditional birth control method. The sympto-thermal method, the ovulation method, the standard days method or the rhythm method are just a few of the natural birth control options people rely on. Yet, they seem to work in a similar way.

The Standard Days Method

The menstrual cycle is divided into three main periods according to the standard days method. Day number 1 is the first day of the period. There are very reduced chances of getting pregnant if you have sex between day 1 and day 8. Between day 9 and day 18, ovulation takes place and you are fertile. Use another birth control method or abstain. Natural birth control is once again possible between day 20 and day 32.

The Ovulation Method

A woman can recognize when ovulation is about to begin by the changes in the cervical mucus, yet, it is often hard to tell. Ovulation usually takes place between the 9th and the 18th day of the menstrual cycle, but variations are possible from woman to woman. If you prefer natural birth control, you can use the fertility tests available in drug stores to learn when you are most fertile, and use extra birth control during that period or abstain from sex.

The Sympto-Thermal Method

The sympto-thermal method is both a natural birth control solution as well as an option for couples trying to conceive. It requires a careful monitoring of the changes in the body and it needs several months to reach a conclusion for the observation. There are no guarantees with natural birth control. There are many unknown factors in the way a woman’s body behaves during the menstrual cycle, and in many cases unplanned pregnancies have appeared like this.

The efficiency of natural birth control methods is higher when the menstrual pattern is regular. Talk to your physician about the options you have, and see what he/she advises for. Professional advice could simplify your choices a lot, and good information could save you from an unwanted pregnancy!

Sexual awareness, good knowledge of how the body works and plenty of involvement in the family life are necessary for a couple to successfully practice natural family planning. Among the most common options here we can mention tests for ovulation, the monitoring of the cervical mucus, the basal temperature method, the standard days method, and even computer fertility tests and charts.

Natural family planning comes cheap and it is not difficult to understand and put into practice. Yet, it requires willingness to accept the eventual limitations of the method as well as good communication with the life partner. There are around ten days every month when sexual intercourse without birth control may result in pregnancy. Two choices are possible: not to have sex or use some other birth control method. Mention must be made that natural family planning does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, therefore, it should be used only if you know your partner very well. Condoms are the only ones that can stop STD.

It is important for the woman to interpret her fertility daily, so that natural family planning be effective. Keep in mind that there are chances of getting pregnant even if you calculate your fertile and infertile days; consequently, consider alternative birth control if a pregnancy could be devastating for you. Therefore, if a possible pregnancy would not be such a disaster for you, natural family planning could be taken more lightly. The effectiveness of the method totally depends on how accurate and precise the woman is with the determination of the fertile period of the month.

In the case of perfect usage, natural family planning is more effective than oral contraceptives. Yet, if we are to discuss not the perfect user but the average user, the efficiency rate drops somewhere between 75% and 88%. These data look closer to reality because rules are seldom followed that correctly.

Who relies on natural family planning? Such birth control choices are very popular with people who do not use other contraceptive methods because of some religious or cultural beliefs. There are families that won’t mind conceiving and therefore take little care of birth control. In fact, for lots of people who try natural family planning, a baby would not be a mistake or a problem.

If you don’t look after your cervix, infertility might be waiting for you

February 19, 2010 by pregnancy

Just in case your anatomy education is a bit dodgy, the cervix is like the gateway between the vagina and the uterus. The cervix needs to be in good working order so that you can conceive and so that you can carry and deliver your baby when the time comes. To be able to get through to the egg, the spermies have to go through the cervix, so therefore if there are any blockages you may struggle to conceive. You only have one cervix, and that’s normally the only way for the sperm to get in and it’s the standard way for the baby to get out, so look after it!

Some things that can go wrong at the cervix are:

· Even though you might want a baby, your cervical mucus could be hostile to sperm. Generally, when you ovulate your cervical mucus (usually found at the vaginal opening) is a bit like egg white – clear, watery and stretchy. If your cervical mucus is hostile it basically means that either it doesn’t thin enough so the spermies can’t swim easily, or not enough is produced. To make the situation worse, your cervical mucus can hurt or kill the unfortunate sperms if it has anti-sperm antibodies in it. Just a small factoid while we’re on the topic, part of how hormonal contraceptives work is by making the cervical mucus thick so that the sperm can’t get through.

· Cervical stenosis is the narrowing of the cervix which might also impact your fertility negatively. You may have inherited a narrow cervix, or it could have become narrower due to scarring as a result of surgery or infection.

· Another big word associated with cervix infertility is Cervicitis. Essentially, the word simply means that the cervix is swollen or inflamed and this will influence your fertility and your ability to carry your pregnancy to term or to deliver your baby the usual way.

Looking after your cervix:

· To up your odds of overcoming cervical cancer, and to steer clear of surgery and other treatments you ought to have regular pap smears. You need to have a pap smear no less than once every two years from age 18 – more regularly if you are particularly at risk. An operation to take out a tumour can scar the cervix so that it doesn’t make the right kind of mucus or the opening becomes too small. You can decrease your chance of getting cervical cancer by limiting your sexual partners and waiting until 18 to become sexually active. No, that’s not a tall tale they made up to scare teenagers, it’s the truth, so warn your daughters.

· Be safe, don’t have an abortion, as every time someone sticks a sharp instrument up there your chance of injury goes up. Damage to the cervix can seal it so that it’s difficult for sperm to swim through, or it may prevent the cervix from working properly leading to something called an ‘incompetent cervix’ which increases your risk of complications and even miscarriage.

· Avoid cervicitis by not engaging in risky behavior when it comes to your sex life. STDs are not fun! I know I mentioned it before, but here you have it again: foreign objects up the vagina, multiple sexual partners, being sexually active before age 18, and other high risk behaviors can all lead to cervicitis and cervicitis can increase your chance of chronic pain, cervical cancer, infertility and pregnancy complications. Encourage others to be responsible about their sexuality as well.

So hopefully you can understand that if you have issues with your cervix, infertility is an issue you might need to deal with in the years to come. Luckily, many cervical complications can be prevented, so do you what you can to avoid them and encourage your daughters to look after their cervixes too!

Do You Have Pregnancy Gingivitis

February 17, 2010 by pregnancy

It is understandable that the excitement of pregnancy keeps you busy in many ways. A simple word of caution is recommended here: This is an especially important time to look after your dental health.

Actually, some would suggest that this is the time to really pay attention to overall health and well-being. There is an old saying about the number of teeth missing being equal to the number of children a mother gives birth too.

Though certainly not one-hundred percent accurate, there may be a kernel of truth in this. The fact is that women are more likely to develop gum health problems during pregnancy. Hormones have a great role to play in this scenario.

If you are a mother-to-be, pay special attention to your oral health. Do not be content with just brushing and flossing. Consider using  a good oral irrigator, such as a hydrofloss.

Another excellent product to consider would be an oxygenated, ph balanced mouthwash. There are many mouthwashes on the market but very few that harness the power of oxygen with a proper pH. The importance of this should not be overlooked. A mouthwash such as the therabreath brands might be useful.

Chew xylitol gum. Xylitol has been used in Finland since WWII and they have found that the incidence of dental disease is lower as a result. Xylitol is fine for human consumption but keep it away from pets.

Make sure there is someone looking at your gums a little more frequently during pregnancy – just to make sure that problems are not creeping in. As mentioned before, the probability for developing gingivitis / gum disease increases during pregnancy. If you do not know what you are looking for, then you need someone who can help. Besides, it is not so easy for a person to examine her own mouth.

If you prefer a natural approach, Oramd, may be helpful.

Ask your practitioner about your pocket depths and how they relate to the health of your gums and teeth.

For centuries, the art and often referred to as the health practice of acupuncture has been present in various countries mostly in the Asian region. This defines the greatness as well as the grandiosity of pinning fine needles in different vital points of the body for different purposes like pain relief and treatment of some health ailments. The basic effect of acupuncture on infertility is regulating a person’s blood pressure through the proper stimulation of our central nervous system. It greatly encourages the production and release of endorphins that play a vital part of inhibiting the pain and neurohormones and neurotransmitters in making the body heal on its own.

Acupuncture on infertility is also seen as one effective means to treat infertility concerns particularly that of hormonal imbalance. The hormone levels are regulated accordingly by increasing the blood flow on various vital organs as it regulates the body system as well. Moreover, it aids in improving the significant functions of the ovaries and the follicles too. The endometrium is generally responsible for thickening the uterus lining which benefits from acupuncture because of increased blood flow. A specific treatment for infertility such as IVFor In Vitro Fertilization is also greatly supported to enhance its success rate. As a matter of fact, many specialists now offer acupuncture as part of what is known as IVF treatment. This becomes observable in the improvements done in the process of moving the embryo which would results to a more successful pregnancy. Another specific issue of infertility that can be treated as well by acupuncture is the presence of spasmed tubes. It can be done through turning these spasmed tubes into de-spasmed ones. Moreover, there are also lots of other infertility issues that can be effectively treated by acupuncture like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, elevated follicle stimulating hormone, repeated pregnancy loss, idiopathic infertility, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia, and sperm DNA fragmentation.

The body can heal itself naturally and acupuncture only develops this ability. In this case, the more you treat yourself to acupuncture the healthier it is for you. For those women who are about to take IVF treatments or donor egg transfer, they are often dealt with acupuncture for about three to four months before undergoing the said process. Acupuncture is strongly advised for women before and after they have the embryo transfer. This is done for the purpose of enhancing the therapeutic effect along with different infertility treatments. Basically, fertility treatments are often stressful for the involved person. And what is considered the best remedy for this is acupuncture. Since acupuncture has a lot of ways to add in treating infertility, it is advisable for couples who suffer from it to give chance for every possible option.

Acupuncture also has accompanied risks but is very minimal. Nevertheless, miscarriage can take place as acupuncture is not done properly on a pregnant woman. This makes it significant to ensure that acupuncture is only to be done by a certified acupuncturist who is really capable and specializes in that type of therapy. Electro-acupuncture is the advanced form of acupuncture that inhibits pain during labor. Hospitalization needs can be significantly reduced which prevents a person to spend much.

Above everything, recent studies have disclosed that the right blend of herbal medicine, acupuncture, and traditional medical help serve as the right formula for infertility treatment. In a lot of cased, acupuncture and herbal medicines are found to be more effective with the help of traditional medical help.
